GUEST POST: Robert Mulrey
For anyone who is not aware we just acquired defensive end Michael Bennett from the Philadelphia Eagles (Lane Johnson keep chirping) in exchange for a 5th round pick this year and we received a 7th rounder. That being said this is a great pickup for New England, Bennett is somewhat familiar with playing the Patriots so he should be fine right from the get go and has already been in the league for about 10 years meaning it is safe to say he knows the game. This is good for us because with the upcoming free agency we are most definitely going to see a good amount of players depart for others teams some named Trey Flowers who wants to get paid and Bennett will take his spot a top the depth chart. There are a lot of reasons that you can say Bennett will benefit us such as our young up and coming defensive ends Derek Rivers and Deatrich Wise jr. I say this due to the fact that with Bennett’s track record in the league he can be like a mentor to the younger players.
Bennett is going to be just fine in the patriots’ system although he will have to pick up the team’s playbook and be up to par and that is where of course his brother Martellus Bennett comes in to the equation. Since coming over to the Patriots and after winning a super bowl against the falcons he was traded to the Packers until being claimed off waivers by the Patriots. Long story short, the rumor is Martellus could potentially come out of retirement and there are plenty of sources that have already stated he has always wanted to play with his brother so there is a chance there not to mention the chemistry this would bring to the team both on and off the field and in the locker room as well. Lastly it would be a great to have Martellus on the team however like Josh Gordon and others he has some personal things to fix before even stepping back on the field and I enjoy watching Martysaurus play he’s a good player and shows up when it matters, he does not seem like he’ll be back on the field anytime soon and possibly has some injuries lingering as well so for those reasons I do not think he will be back at least for New England.
